Description

Model history

Concurrent with the Giulietta’s development, Alfa Romeo collaborated with Bertone to produce a series of Berlinetta Aerodinamica Technica studies that produced three concepts cars: the B.A.T. 5, 7 and 9.

More than likely inspired by this partnership, the Bertone-designed Giulietta Sprint Speciale appeared 1957. It was a very streamlined car and achieved a record (for a production car) .28 coefficient of drag, not bested for over 20 years. It was capable of 125mph and the high output of the engine at low rpm granted the car an easy driving in town traffic and difficult roads.

The Sprint Speciale became very populair for racing and took part in several races on mixed roads and tracks, obtaining succes everywhere, just like the Giulietta SZ, which was built on the same chassis as the Sprint Speciale.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963 and replaced the Giulietta 1300. The new 1.6 litre engine, with an output of 112hp and a high increase of torque, offered a better pickup and a smoother use, although keeping the same maximum speed the Giulietta SS. Some ratios were slightly changed in the gearbox and disc brakes were fitted.

Small interior changes were made as compared with the Giulietta version. A revised dashboard was installed. The exterior remained unchanged, except for the name badges and side winking lights.

The Alfa Romeo ‘SS’ proved very successful in racing and known for its outstanding curvaceous Bertone-design, these cars are highly prized by Alfa Romeo connoisseurs.

This example

This wonderful Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Sprint Speciale was built in 1965 and went after production to the German importer. It was then shipped to the USA where a Mr. Elliott bought the Alfa SS in 1969 at the Ferrari dealer in Portland, Oregon. He traded in an Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider. The owner was a real Alfa enthusiast as he owned 7 Alfa Romeo’s over the years and kept the SS until 1991.

After this long term ownership, the car was sold through a dealer in Berkeley, California in 1991 and exported to the Netherlands. The car was shipped overseas in November 1991 and after inspection it was totally restored at a well known body shop. Lots of pictures of the ground up restoration are available and come with the car. The mechanics were rebuilt where necessary.
In September 1993, the car was presented at the Alfa Romeo club day at Circuit Zandvoort and received much attention.

In 2015, the 2nd Dutch owner bought the car on whose behalf we are selling it now. It is a very lovely Alfa presented in the beautiful color silvergrey with a dark blue interior. The engine runs and drives very well and an extensive documentation file with many invoices is included with the car.

Price is 142.500,- euro.
