At the start of the 1950s, the marque bearing the serpent of Milan entered into a new era. In 1962, the Spider Giulia 1600 made its debut. Similar mechanically and in appearance to its predecessor the Giulietta Spider, it had a different bonnet with an air intake with chrome trim, under which lay the engine of the new Giulia Ti. This was a four-cylinder 1570cc unit, fed by a Solex 32 PAIA 5 twin-barrel carburettor and developing 92bhp at 6200rpm: it promised greater flexibility and reliability and a top speed of 107mph. Its five-speed gearbox with Porsche synchromesh was also new and was exceptionally pleasant to use for its time. Finally, the drum brakes were replaced with discs as standard from 1964. The interior meanwhile retained its charm, with the metal dashboard painted to match the body, three round dials, a floor-mounted gearchange and high-quality leather seats. 9250 units of the Giulia Spider 1600 were produced, before it was replaced in 1966 by the Spider Duetto.
The model presented is a Spider 1600 registered for the first time in France in June 1963 with its current color configuration which distinguishes it from the more common red or white Giulia. After having spent his whole life in France, it is a Dutch enthusiast who acquired it in the Strasbourg area in 2008. Stored dry in a barn, the car is then complete but needs a complete restoration. So its new owner starts a long and meticulous restoration work : bodywork being stripped bare, the engine, gearbox, running gear and interior being removed and rebuilt...
After nearly two years of work illustrated by a file of 170 photos, the Giulia Spider is in new condition and ready to hit the road again. Its original AR-323 Farina Blue colour is superb and goes perfectly with its red leatherette interior. It is in 2015 that its current owner repatriates it in France on the edges of the Arcachon Bay. Kept warm in winter, its owner is also a talented Gentleman Driver who likes to be at the wheel of his Alfa. Perfectly maintained, it will cover nearly 10,000 km at the wheel, including a trip under the sun of Tuscany last summer. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider 1600 is one of the brand's most seductive sports cars and is the perfect embodiment of post-war dolce vita. Its perfect working order will certainly allow its purchaser to enjoy the arrival of the good weather without delay.
