Formerly a manufacturer of bespoke thoroughbreds, during the 1950s Alfa Romeo was forced to face economic reality: mass-production was its future. Some mourned this change of direction, but the firm’s first volume roadster—the Giulietta Spider—was a runaway success. The brainchild of American importer Max Hoffman, the Pinin Farina-styled two-seater was unveiled in 1955, and borrowed heavily from the 750-series Sprint and saloon. Initially equipped with a 1,290 cc twin-cam, this was superseded in 1962 by a 1,570 cc unit in the visually similar Giulia Spider. Blessed with excellent handling, a five-speed gearbox, and a bewitching soundtrack, these Alfa Romeos are undoubtedly the archetypal Italian sports car.
Originally exported to California, chassis 375424 was completed on 10 January 1963. Finished in Rosso AR with a Nero cockpit, the car was delivered to San Francisco on 25 March. The Spider remained in the USA until 2018, when it was acquired by the consigning owner. Since returning to Europe, it has been the subject of considerable work, including a repaint and new carpets. A replacement metric speedometer was also fitted.
Beautifully presented and fresh from restoration, this evocative machine is a wonderful example of its type. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mu23.
