MODEL HISTORY

The Giulietta family of cars were introduced in 1954 and produced in various body styles (Berlina, Sprint, Spider, Sprint Speciale and Sprint Zagato). It was fitting for the new family of Alfa Romeos to use a new engine, which came in the form of the beautifully engineered 1,300cc twin cam that would be used in Alfa Romeos until 1994, albeit in varying capacities. The Spider was introduced in mid-1955 sporting a stunning body by Pinin Farina. In 1962, the Giulietta family became the Giulia family. Not a huge amount changed visually but the Giulia models featured a 1,600cc version of the same twin cam engine that would become the staple of Alfa Romeos for years to come.

THIS MOTOR CAR

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider for sale at The Classic Motor Hub was delivered new in 1963 to a Signore Giorgio Mara from Busto Arsizio, a small city just 20 miles from Milan, where the Alfa Romeo factory was. The early history is unknown but from correspondence with previous owners we understand that the car was bought by Giancarlo Comana in Bergamo ,who had the car tuned, in period, by Alfa Romeo specialist Angelo Chiapparini.

Signore Comana raced the car all through the 1980’s taking part in a number of European Championships, during which the car raced at the Nürburgring, Spa, Monthléry, Mugello, Monza, Brands Hatch and Imola. In the late 1980’s the famed rally, the Carrera Panamericana, a gruelling race that took place in the 1950’s through Mexico, was resurrected and in 1990, well known Ferrari collector and racer, Corrado Cupellini, bought the Alfa Romeo to take part. There are photos on file showing the car on the event with a custom made alloy hardtop and doors, which accompany the car today.

After the event it would seem this Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider was sold back to Signore Comana who kept the car until 1997 when he sold it to Daniele Turrisi. He in turn kept the car a couple of years before selling it through the Poulain Le Fur auction in Paris (now Artcurial) where it was bought by UK based, Martyn Charles. This is where the invoice trail in the file starts and it would seem Mr. Charles kept using the car for competition and spent a significant amount of time and money making sure the car was in tip top condition mechanically. In his ownership he went through the car mechanically including:

All new suspension front and rear inc. bushes etc.
Steering completely overhauled.
Top end rebuild on the engine including new racing valves, springs, high lift camshafts and all new cam chains.
Weber carbs rebuilt.
New FIA spec roll cage and FIA spec belts.
Fuel cell and fire extinguishers.
Uprated anti roll bars and bushes.
New brake disc and calipers all round.
New high capacity radiator and hoses.
Full flow 4 branch exhaust manifold and system.
In 2008 the Alfa passed into the hands of James Wheeler of Black & White Garage, a very well respected Alfa Romeo dealer and specialist at the time. During his ownership he competed in many rallies and events including Goodwood Revival and the Vernasca Silver Flag. The trend of keeping the car in excellent mechanical condition was kept up including some cosmetic works and an extensive engine overhaul. In 2012 the current owner, a seasoned Alfa Romeo owner part exchanged his road going Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce for this car.

Originally, the intention was to race the car but eventually the decision was made to recommission the car in certain areas (suspension, roll cage removal and a refreshed interior) to make it more usable on the road. A new soft top and frame were fitted and now the car offers a more road focused experience but with all the go and grunt of the race car that this wonderful Alfa Romeo used to be.

Now for sale and ready for immediate inspection at The Classic Motor Hub, this Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider comes with an extensive history file and is accompanied by a number of spares including 2 x hardtops, 2x lightweight doors and various trim parts for fitting the aforementioned hardtop back on the car. The next owner of this car has a perfect crossroads, one could either use it as a genuinely quick and fun road car, or quite easily, return it to FIA specification, get papers and race it. Either option offers a huge amount of car and fun for the money.
