Description

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Cliveden House event, 8 July 2025.

  • A beautifully authentic-to-specification recreation of the Alfa Romeo 8C Monza interwar race car
  • Rolling chassis and body crafted by The Design Cast concern in New Zealand
  • Meticulously assembled by historic Ferrari and Alfa Romeo expert Setford & Company in a process requiring more than 2,100 hours of labour
  • Powered by a 3-litre supercharged straight-eight mated to a four-speed gearbox; powertrain built by Jim Stokes Workshop at a cost of over £315,000
  • Accompanied by an FIA Historic Technical Passport; eligible for a variety of prominent historic race and rally events

To complement a stable of significant race cars, the consigning owner—an established GT and sportscar driver, who has more recently enjoyed great success in historic motorsport—commissioned this exquisitely realised recreation of the famed Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza. The painstaking process of bringing it to life started in Auckland, New Zealand. There, Colin Howard and his The Design Cast Limited company built up the existing chassis and bodywork between July 2019 and February 2021 in work totalling $555,000 NZD (approx. £247,320). The chassis was entirely modified and assigned the number 710724.

The car was then shipped to the United Kingdom, where the rest of the project was assigned to two of the world’s leading classic Alfa Romeo specialists in the pursuit of creating the most accurate and detailed evocation of an original 8C Monza. Based around an aluminium block, a top-specification 3,051-cc supercharged straight-eight engine—which is rated at 260 brake horsepower—and a four-speed gearbox were built to order by Jim Stokes Workshop of Waterlooville in Hampshire at a cost of some £315,849. Then, through to August 2023, the car was entrusted to nearby Setford & Company of Droxford.

A staggering amount of attention to detail was put in thereafter, as the car was stripped back to its bare steel chassis and every aspect gone over with a fine-toothed comb. The body was perfected as panels were aligned, bolts repositioned, and authentic fixings made. Setford & Company also fitted the engine and gearbox in addition to the rest of the drivetrain, built up the drum brakes and leaf spring suspension that features adjustable friction dampers, custom made the entire wiring system, sourced a period-correct set of instruments, and produced the bespoke luggage boxes. Wherever possible, the correct 8C components were used. New-old stock Bosch headlamps (costing £3,500 alone), tail lights, horn, ignition switch, brake light switch, and Alfa Romeo badge were fitted. According to the bevy of accompanying invoices on file, Setford & Company staggeringly put more than 2,100 hours into the project.

To cap off this stunning recreation, it is presented in a pale blue hue reminiscent of the Alfa Romeo 8C Monza raced to great success by Louis Chiron. However, the consigning owner was keen for his commission not to be seen as an homage to that car specifically. As such, this machine, which features beautiful brown hide, has been embellished with an ivory-coloured grille surround and side stripe to create an identity of its own.

Given the exceptional care lavished upon the Alfa Romeo, in April 2023 it was recognised by the FIA motorsport governing body with an Historic Technical Passport. Accordingly, it is eligible for many of the most prestigious races and rallies on the historic calendar.

Offered here is arguably the finest recreation ever conceived of an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300—a model most famous for claiming victory in the 1931 edition of the Italian Grand Prix to earn its “Monza” nickname, in addition to winning the Targa Florio in 1931 and 1932 with Tazio Nuvolari at the wheel. Therefore, the opportunity to acquire this car direct from the vendor, who commissioned and oversaw the entire process, is not to be missed.
