Description

The 6C 2500, introduced in 1938, was the final Alfa Romeo model powered by a Vittorio Jano-designed engine. Jano’s six- and eight-cylinder engines, some of the most revered in the automotive world, powered Alfa Romeo’s finest offerings before and after WWII. At the top of the 6C 2500 range was the Super Sport model, or SS, which benefited from a 12” shorter wheelbase, three Weber carburetors, and a higher compression ratio.

This absolutely stunning Pinin Farina Cabriolet was manufactured in August 1949 and sold new to Compagnie Générale des Voitures in Paris on November 9, 1950. It remained in France through the late 1960s and was acquired in June 1969 by the eccentric collector Guido Bartolomeo. The Alfa Romeo remained in his collection until he passed away in 2002, at which time it was sold to the Tulli Brothers of Rome. In 2005 the 6C 2500 was sold to the Marchioni Automobili Collection located outside of Florence and it remained there until 2013 when it was purchased by Miami-based collector Leo Schigiel.

Even before his acquisition, Mr. Schigiel had Italian car specialist Paolo di Taranto research and inspect the 6C extensively to confirm its history, condition, and the originality of its components. Mr. Schigiel then decided that since the car was so complete, and since it was such a rare and important model, it deserved a total restoration. He entrusted top Italian specialists to return it to its original glory.

The majority of the restoration was performed by marque experts Carrozzeria Capello, based near Torino, Italy, but the engine and gearbox were sent to the specialists at Bainotti Giuseppe. During the restoration, the original paint color was reportedly discovered, and then cleaned and electronically matched for utmost accuracy. The original interior also appeared largely intact, allowing the restorers to be as precise as possible when sourcing new materials and producing patterns.

After the three-year restoration was completed, the Alfa Romeo was imported to the US and shown at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® and the 2017 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, where it received The Gil Nickel Far Niente Award. A testament to its outstanding presentation, the 6C has also received Best of Show honors at the Art in Motion and Miami Concours d’Elegance. This Alfa Romeo is accompanied by its original French registration document, copious records, manuals, tool kit, jack, knock-off hammer, and matching red leather luggage.

The International Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Register indicates that just 63 examples of the 6C 2500 SS Cabriolet were built in the postwar period, making this an incredibly rare find indeed. Add to that this example’s gorgeous color combination, professional restoration by marque experts in Italy, and impressive history file, and you have a 6C 2500 SS worthy of the most discerning collections.
