Description

At the beginning of the 60s, an historic moment of great ferment and optimism, the Italians dream of a 600. The ambitious Italians instead dream of an Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint: beautiful, rich, modern, fast, expensive but not as unreachable as Maserati and Ferrari, the 2600 is a more “human” dream, more reachable. A down-to-earth dream, a balanced car with a powerful but non-cranky engine, comfortable in traffic and suitable for everyday driving, even if not exactly economical. Introduced in 1962 the 2600 Sprint replaces the 2000 Sprint of 1959 of which it is the evolution, it is an elegant, sporty, high-performance car. The new market requirements and the competition models of 1961, had made the performance of the 2000 Sprint insufficient with its four-cylinder 115 hp shaft. The leaders of Alfa Romeo decide to create a new version, for a clientele that requires a fast, elegant, sporty car with performance in line with the competition. Thus was born the 2600 Sprint with 6-cylinder in-line engine and 145 Cv DIN. The 2600 Sprint was dedicated to a medium-high clientele, to the ruling class of Italy of the economic boom that wanted to stand out. Stylistically the 2600 Sprint is very similar to the 2000 Sprint, apart from the air intake on the bonnet and the slots under the bumper, a line from which the 1964 Giulia Sprint GT will take inspiration, the real novelty is the engine, a powerful bialbero from 2,584 cc with 6 cylinders in line, three double-body carburettors and 145 Cv DIN of power, capable of pushing the car up to 200 km / h. The 2600 Sprint is a car with a modern line, with attention to detail, a true supercar from the 1960s, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro on behalf of the Carrozzeria Bertone, a well-finished passenger compartment with leather interiors, a mahogany dashboard and a three-spoke sports steering wheel. Bakelite, Veglia instrumentation complete with everything, who tested the 2600 Sprint was fascinated by elegance, grandeur and performance. Another new feature that was a real strength against the competition is the 5-speed gearbox.
