This 2600 Spider is one of only 103 right hand drive Spiders manufactured by Alfa Romeo in 1964. Chassis AR852009 was originally specified in Alfa Rosso paint with a Nero leather interior and fitted with an extremely rare black removable hardtop roof. The Spider has been the subject of a bare metal restoration by marque specialists and is presented in its original specification.

First registered on 5th March 1964 with the registration number ‘1 SRE’ the Alfa Romeo was delivered to its first owner Mr Charles Weight of the West Midlands. Mr Weight was the proprietor of a successful agricultural engineering business in Wolverhampton which specialised in tracked vehicles.

Within a short period of time the Spider was re-registered ‘PRF 968B’ and sold to Lord Godfrey Bostock the High Sheriff of Stafford. Lord Bostock would keep the car until 1969 when it passed into new ownership in the Cardiff area. In 1978, ‘PRF 968B’ was bought by Mr Richard Jones from Stourport-on-Severn who would keep the Alfa Romeo until 1994 when the car was purchased by Mr Robert King an Alfa Romeo enthusiast from the Malvern area in Worcestershire who participated in Club Alfa Romeo events.

In March 2015, ‘PRF 968B’ was consigned to auction and was acquired by the Bamford family, who hold one of the greatest car collections in the UK. The Bamford’s used the car for just one year before it was sold to the current owner in May 2016.

Over the years the Alfa Romeo had received ongoing servicing and maintenance and although was in a useable state, the new owner decided to have the Spider comprehensively restored by an Alfa Romeo specialist in the UK. The Spider was appraised in the summer of 2016 and a restoration programme established with the owner; this was to include the following work;

- Strip the vehicle to a bare body shell for media blasting and zinc phosphate coating
- Carry out metal work on lower panels, floors, inner and outer sills
- Repair and reshape all panels, level and prepare body shell
- Full mechanical rebuild; rebuild engine, fully balance bottom end, convert to unleaded and fit stainless exhaust valves, seats etc. Repair cylinder head where typically corroded in waterways. Replace cylinders and liners. Glass blast all parts and refinish to factory standard.
- Fully rebuild ancillaries. Detail finish engine. Replace external parts as required.
- Rebuild gearbox
- Rebuild rear axle with new bearings. Blast casing and refinish to factory standard.
- Rewire entire car with new loom. Rebuild all light units where stripped for chroming etc with new internals. Strip and rebuild gauges.
- Strip and rebuild and all front and rear suspension, detail finish all suspension arms. Strip and fully rebuild steering and idler boxes.
- Overhaul and rebuild brakes. Renew all pipework.
- Rebuild and recover dashboard including handles.
- Remake door cards to factory pattern. Strip and recover all original peripheral interior parts.
- Remake new carpet set in wool with leather binding.
- Rebuild front and rear seats. Replace foams and Pirelli strapping as required.
- Rebuild mechanisms.
- Replace soft top with mohair.
- Rebuild soft top frame.
- Rebuild hardtop and make new headlining in correct material.
- Strip, blast and recondition all wheels – fit new correct spec tyres.
- Reassemble car and rebuild to show standard. Tune, test and set up.

Each stage of the restoration was photographed and documented with the work charged across four separate invoices totalling £126,000, these are contained within the history file. The Alfa Romeo was completed in the summer of 2019 with the mileage recorded at 97,831.

‘PRF 968B’ is available today in concours condition having covered a mere 43 miles since the restoration was complete and is offered for sale at a fraction of the purchase and subsequent restoration cost.

This is without doubt the best Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider on the market – we welcome any inspection.
