The weapon of choice for both well-heeled captains of industry and racing drivers alike, Alfa Romeo’s 6C 2500 was a study in understated elegance. Well-appointed and deceptively quick—especially in triple Weber Super Sport trim—the grand tourer proved a firm favourite for everyone from Prince Rainier of Monaco to the dashing Count Trossi, also finding favour with Hollywood starlets such as Rita Hayworth.

The model was introduced just as Europe was spiralling towards war, a more technologically advanced replacement for the 6C 2300B and 8C that featured independent suspension at each corner. It would be the final Alfa Romeo to be sold with a separate chassis, with a number of Italian coachbuilders including Pinin Farina and Ghia putting their mark on the short-chassis Super Sport once production had restarted in 1945. Carrozzeria Touring’s take proved the most resolved and popular among sporting drivers, thanks in large part to its lightweight Superleggera body construction, with the second series of cars—boasting more pronounced flared wheel arches—accounting for around 120 examples.

According to factory records, chassis 915657 was delivered to Carrozzeria Touring on 14 June 1948. Over the next eight months the Milanese coachbuilder clothed the car in a stunning second series Superleggera body, with the completed car leaving the busy workshops on Via Ludovico di Breme on 23 January 1949. The car was delivered to its first owner, Robert Setton, in Rome, Italy and was later exported to the United States, where it entered the collection of noted Alfisti Tom Segar of Boston, Massachusetts. The car was later referenced in the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Register as belonging to Donald McLellan during the 1970s, at which point it was finished in white over a brown interior and was described as in “rough but restorable condition”. It then passed through the hands of marque guru Peter Wessel, Investment Cars, Inc of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Rafin-Car S.r.l, before finding a home with Brescia-based enthusiast Dr. Massimo Montemezzi in 1995.

In Montemezzi’s care the Alfa Romeo was said to have been subject to a five-year restoration that was ultimately seen through to completion by marque specialist H.D. Dambacher, prior to the current owner buying the car in March 2011. According to the consigning owner, engine assembly and testing was carried out by Aldo Zanone, retrimming by Autoselleria Brescia, while final assembly is said to have been carried out by Carrozzeria Grillo. During the rebuild, it is understood that many body components were found to be stamped with the car’s original body number, while an accompanying letter from noted Alfa Romeo collector, Siegfried Otto Hepp, states that the crankshaft stamping corresponds to the original engine number.

Following the completion of its restoration, this striking two-tone 6C 2500 Super Sports has been used regularly in historic tours and events including a 2010 outing at the Mille Miglia Storica, signifying its eligibility for perhaps the greatest of all historic road rallies.
