While Group B and rallying provided the thrills in the 1980s, it was the Super Touring Championship that excited the crowds during the 1990s. The track became a playground for different marques, with fiercely contested battles between race cars based on standard saloon cars.
The 155 D2 replaced the legendary 155 V6 DTM Championship-winning model in 1993. The example presented is equipped with the 2-litre Alfa D2 engine developing 310 bhp at 9000 rpm, built by Abarth. Imagine the sound as it climbs through the revs. This car took part in the German Touring Car Championship (Super Tourenwagen Cup) in the hands of Franz Engstler of the Alfa Team Engstler in 1996 and Cool Fire Team Engstler in 1997. Between 2001 and 2005, it participated in the Alfa Romeo Challenge in Holland, driven in 2002 - 2004 by Paul Nieuwenhuis and winning many races.
The current owner, an amateur racer, acquired the Alfa in 2005, and in 2010 he handed it to driver Jeroen Van den Heuvel to take part in the Alfa Romeo Challenge, when it competed at Spa, Zolder and Zandvoort. The car has recently benefitted from a full rebuild of the D2 engine, carried out by Racing Engines.
It has been repainted in the colours of the 155 V6 of Nicola Larini, DTM Champion in 94. The interior is a real invitation to race, fitted with roll-cages, Recaro bucket seats and OMP steering wheel. The car will be sold with its 1997 competition passport and additional parts (mechanical and bodywork parts). This is a fantastic piece, representing an important part of Super Touring history.
The auction of this lot will take place on Friday 18 March 2022.
