Description

The Italian Superturismo Championship was started in 1987 as Italy’s national motor sports series for touring cars. Originally run using FIA’s Group A specification, the series shifted to the new Superturismo category of cars in the early 1990s. Alfa Romeo brought its rich history in racing to the Superturismo series with a variant of its 155 sedan called the GTA. Racing the GTA for Alfa Corse, Nicola Larini won the 1992 Italian Superturismo Championship.

By 1995, the Italian championship was governed by FIA’s Class D2 Superturismo regulations and Alfa Romeo’s racing efforts were run by Nordauto Engineering, which was set up by Alfa Romeo’s parent company, Fiat. That same year, Nordauto campaigned the freshly facelifted 155 D2 Superturismo for Antonio Tamburini and Fabrizio Giovanardi, and they placed third and fourth in the driver’s standings respectively. With regulations stipulating an engine displacement of no more than two liters, the 155 D2 was powered by a 1,970 cc inline four mated to a Hewland five-speed sequentially shifted transaxle. This potent engine revved to nearly 9,000 rpm and produced between 280 and 310 hp, depending on specification.

The 155 D2 Superturismo offered here is chassis 90078 and, according to documents on file including its original logbook, was Giovanardi’s main mount for all of 1995. Formerly a Formula car racer, Giovanardi had been in touring cars for five years by 1995, having won the S2 championship for Peugeot in 1992. His results for the 1995 season included seven podiums in 20 races and a win at Mugello.

The 155 was sold after the 1995 season to EC Motorsport and driven by Roberto Colciago in eight rounds of the Italian championship before being sold again to Club Quadrifoglio Belgio-Delta Sport of Belgium. This team campaigned 90078 for three years in the Belgian Procar with drivers Philipe Eliard, Pascal Witmeur, and Giampiero Simoni.

In 2016, this Alfa Romeo was purchased by Florida-based collector Leo Schigiel from Italian dealer Aquarama Boats & Cars of Perugia, Italy. Subsequently imported into the US, it joined his world-class collection of predominantly Italian road and racing cars. Shortly after, the 155 D2 was taken to the track for testing, where it developed an engine issue. This necessitated a rebuild, which was performed by Champion Motorsport of Pompano Beach, Florida, with receipts for nearly $26,000 on file.

Accompanied by numerous spare parts, period documentation including setup sheets, logbook, and parts manuals, this factory-built Alfa Romeo touring car offers collectors and racers alike the opportunity to experience one of the most dynamic platforms from a golden era of European touring car racing.
