When Carroll Shelby gave up racing due to health problems, he embarked on a project that would put a real slap in the face of the sports car world. He ordered an AC Ace convertible coupe from the British firm AC Cars. At the same time, he went to Chevrolet to obtain a V8 engine but was refused by the manufacturer. He then went to Ford, where he obtained a Small Block 221 V8 and asked his new partner AC to put the engine under the hood of the roadster. After a battery of tests, it is finally the V8 260 which will take place in the engine bay. The tests were conclusive and the first chassis arrived in the United States. In order to increase the excitement around his car, Carroll Shelby and his team present the car at all possible gatherings, taking care to repaint it each time to give the illusion that orders are pouring in. The cars soon flooded the specialized magazines and the press praised them. Very quickly, the new Cobra of the Texan joined the paddocks where the breakages multiplied. It is now necessary to make this car reliable. The V8 260 is quickly joined, then replaced, by the V8 289. From then on, the order books were full and so were the victories. In endurance or hill-climbing races, the Cobra became famous even if it lost some feathers. The V8 Big Block 427 completed the offer and brought glory to some and fear to others. The greatest drivers of the time fought to be and to win, among them Ken Miles, Bob Bondurant and Dan Gurney. Other lesser-known drivers will also compete for this car in various teams such as Essex Wire. The AC Cobra will also be at the origin of the Cobra Daytona Coupe, which will also participate in Le Mans on several occasions.
The AC Cobra that we present to you is a kit car registered in Poland. The bodywork is based on the Cobra 427, recognizable thanks to its bodybuilt look at the rear. The paint is light blue and decorated with two dark blue stripes. Inside, the black leather upholstery is in good condition. The dashboard looks like marine wood and reminds us of the English cars of the time. But what is most interesting is what's under the hood. Indeed, it is a BMW inline six cylinder engine that allows this car to move. The engine is coupled to a manual gearbox. The noise that this engine makes turns heads!
