When the 695 Biposto was revealed at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show, Abarth revived a nameplate that harked back to one of the tuner’s most successful collaborations with Fiat. The Fiat-Abarth 695 SS had come to being some 50 years earlier, beginning production in 1964 and based on the original Fiat 500—though with significant performance upgrades. Separated by half a century, the modern Abarth was also based on the Fiat 500, capturing much of the magic of the sporting original. The Italian marque stated the 695 Biposto was “the fastest street legal Abarth ever” when it was announced.

At the time of its unveiling, the 695 Biposto was claimed by Abarth to be the only production car in its category to feature an H-pattern gearbox with dog rings. The impressive all-aluminium gear lever turret worked with a clutch and self-locking differential derived from motorsport, notably taking time out of upwards shifting. Abarth even endorsed changing up without engaging the clutch to save precious seconds when pushing the car to its limits. The 695 Biposto tipped the scales at just 997 kilograms, while the 1.4-litre T-Jet engine produced 190 horsepower, making for an excellent weight-to-power ratio. The Abarth could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 230 km/h.

The example offered here joined The Carrera Collection in October 2017, after being acquired from ASR Auto Handel und Service GmbH, the official Abarth dealer in Gröbenzell, Germany. At the time of purchase, the odometer was noted as showing just 50 kilometres. As noted by the vendor’s purchase invoice (available to view in the history file), the Abarth is specified with the desirable “Pista Kit”, adding a digital data logger, four-point seatbelts, and carbon-backed racing seats to a trim package already bolstered by 18-inch alloy wheels, fixed position polycarbonate windows with sliding panels, and Abarth-specific body kit with the rest of the car finished in Grigio Opaco. The odometer reads just 621 kilometres at the time of cataloguing.

With its blistering top speed, an engine more usually found in a Formula 4 single-seater, and a costly dog-ring gearbox that accounts for more than a quarter of the retail list price, Abarth’s greatest modern creation more than lives up to its billing as “the world’s smallest supercar”.
