Introduced in 1976, the Porsche 935 was a competition development of the 911 Turbo although it was to evolve out of all recognition and, along the way, acquire an entirely new engine. Even when still basically a 911 derivative, it won most rounds of the World Championship of Makes and secured the title for Porsche. From then until Group C arrived in 1982 it was the main weapon in Porsche''''s armoury, it won the vast majority of World Championship races and gave Porsche the title every single year except 1981. In some ways the IMSA wins were even more significant than the 935''''s incredible run in the World Championship of Makes. They were run by privateers and in some years the level of competition which the 935s faced in IMSA was actually higher than in Europe.
