Description

1951 Vincent 499cc Comet
Frame no. RC/1/7239 (see text)
Engine no. F5AB/2A/4855 (see text)

Effectively a Rapide v-twin minus its rear cylinder, the Series-C Vincent Comet built from 1949 to 1954 offered the same degree of refinement as its bigger brother, albeit with reduced performance. Even so, the Comet combined a 90mph potential with excellent fuel economy, and was the ideal touring mount for the discerning rider who placed civility of manners and quality of construction above outright performance. Previously registered 'KRU 756' in the UK, this Vincent Comet was registered in Guernsey from July 1994 to 2010 and comes with a copy of its old Guernsey registration document, UK Certificate of Permanent Export, some old tax discs and sundry maintenance invoices. It should be noted that the engine number does not match that recorded on the registration document and that it is not possible to determine the frame number (painted over). The current owner purchased the machine at Bonhams' Beaulieu Sale in September 2010 (Lot 478). At that time the Comet was said to have a new clutch (fitted five years previously); a reconditioned magneto; and a new advance/retard unit, carburettor float bowl and left-side footrest hanger. Last ridden a few months ago, it is described by the vendor as in generally excellent working order.
