For all of us that love motorcycles, the reemergence of the Norton brand has been a wonderful thing to behold and under Stuart Garner the company seems to be going from strength to strength. Their range of bespoke built bikes based around their 80hp, 961cc twin has energised and enhanced the modern café racer world with noise, style and heritage few other companies can compete with.

The bike we offer here is not only a wonderful new Norton Dominator SS but it has been beautifully customised by ’72 Motorcycles’ into an utter work of art. 72 Motorcycles are no strangers to Norton having previously created the Ron Wood tribute bike a few years ago but this sleek, menacing looking machine is for my money their finest creation yet. Based on a 2018 Dominator SS, Jamie and Merry have designed the bike to be narrow and full of purpose. Helped at the outset by Stuart, who gave them access to the Norton parts bins so they could choose which bits they wanted on the donor bike they then went about enhancing the looks but keeping the fundamental mechanical components standard. The original fuel tank is already a thing of beauty so it was kept but given a custom two tone matt and gloss black paint scheme with a gold pinstripe with cream scallops containing the Phantom name ghosted into it. This colour scheme flows from the front to the back of the bike, on the mudguards, the fairing, the seat unit and rear hugger with the gold pinstripe tying in nicely with the Ohlins shocks and forks. The stopping power is provided but Brembo monoblock calipers.

The front of the bike has been adorned with a tidy little fairing carefully sculptured from aluminum with neat air scoops either side harking back to the 60s. The fairing sits tight against the supper bright single headlight by J.W. Speaker that adds light to the direction you are leaning in as you go through the corners. An expensive but clever bit of kit. The neatness of the front end has meant that the original Brembo brake and clutch reservoirs had to be replaced with smaller units from the Italian performance specialists, Rizoma, these gems are also used on the rear brake. The original seat has been replaced with perhaps the best bit of bodywork on the bike. The custom seat uni is just stunning. Simple, with again the air-scoops mirroring the front fairing and suede pads offering the grip you need to keep you on in the corners. However non of the frame or wiring was alters so it can be returned to standard should anyone be crazy enough to do so. Compact bar-end M-Blaze disc indicators and similar units at the rear along with a neat LED black light complete the tidying up process.

Since its construction the Phantom has enjoyed a lot of press attention having been invited to The Bike Shed Show and Wheels and Waves in Biarriz where it also took part in the Punks Peak hillclimb. The bike has covered just 98 miles from new, comes fully UK registered with its original book pack and 3 sets of exhaust pipes from the ear splitting loud ones current on it to more MOT friendly ones.
