Launched in 1967, the Commando debuted Norton’s new “Isolastic” engine mounts. The new design made for a bike that idled and rode smoothly, in spite of the large displacement parallel-twin engine that powered it. The public adored the new model, earning it Motorcycle News’ “Machine of the Year” five years in a row.

In 1974, to recognize John Player & Sons’s major sponsorship of the Norton racing team and to celebrate the success of their factory race bikes, Norton launched the Commando “John Player Special.” This new variation, referred to as the “JPS,” was evocative of a factory racing bike with its red, white, and blue John Player Special livery and aerodynamic half-fairing with twin spotlights.

Although this John Player Special’s early history is unknown, it was acquired by the consignor in England in 2011. Equipped with correct black-chromed exhaust pipes, this special variant of the Commando is especially sought after by serious Norton collectors. As one of an estimated 200 examples built in 1974, this represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic and collectible British sport bikes of the era.
