Description

The CB400F was introduced in late 1974 as a replacement for the technically interesting, but underwhelming CB350F. It is often referred to as being among the finest designs of its era, highlighted by a swooping four-into-one exhaust system and classically handsome styling. The 408 cc inline-four engine featured a 4 mm bore increase over the CB350F, and additional revisions increased power from 30 to 37 hp at 8,500 rpm, all with the ability to handle trips to its lofty 10,000 rpm redline.

According to the consignor, the CB400F offered here was sold new to Mike’s Cycle Shop in Appleton, Wisconsin, which retained it until 1980, when it was sold to its second owner, then displaying 400 miles on the odometer. In 1999, the consignor purchased the CB, showing 784 miles at the time, and has ridden it approximately 10 miles in the ensuing 25 years, keeping the bike in his extensive collection. The CB400F is superbly preserved and the mileage, paint, and tires are original, according to the consignor. In 2023, the Honda was serviced for use, but ridden sparingly.

This CB400F from the first year of production is an extremely desirable example, having been preserved by just three caring owners from new. As a model that stands as one of Honda’s gems from the 1970s, it is one to watch for the astute collector.
