Wyles Hardy Auction Preview - 25th March 2006

The final piece in the puzzle that is the sad demise of MG Rover will be placed shortly when the assets of MG Sport & Racing Cars are auctioned off at the company’s Birmingham premises. Included in the sale will be two Qvale Mangustas, and two XPower SV-Rs, the 400 bhp Peter Stevens-designed coupé.

The Qvale Mangustas - MG Rover having purchased the rights - are there because the XPower SV utilised many of the cars’ design features, and the SV-Rs (a car that carried a starting price of £82,950.00 when launched in 2004) are the last chance to buy the fastest production MG ever made. In addition to the completed cars, Wyles Hardy are also selling by Private Treaty seven XPower SV and SV-R rolling chassis requiring various degrees of finishing.

The sale in total features some 915 lots that include sports, road and racing cars, rally cars, record cars, race support vehicles, display cars, and all the infrastructure and memorabilia associated with the company’s recent competition history. There’s also garage equipment such as spray booths, assorted hand tools and test equipment, trailers and 2-post vehicle lifts.

The racing and rally cars include such gems as the MG ZR Judd 2.0 litre endurance racer as used in the BritCar series, as well as the abortive DTM replica machine that was designed to be part of a two-car attack on the prestigious German championship in 2005. The MG 'ZT V8' Left Hand Drive Belcup Endurance Race Car is the last competition car built by MG Sports & Racing Ltd, and features a 32V 480bhp Ford V8. It’s estimated at £30,000 - £40,000 - a fraction of its build cost. There are also several Group N rally cars in varying engine sizes to meet different classes.

It’s in the record cars that you’ll find some of the most interesting lots. Cars such as the MG 'ZT-T 765 Bonneville' Land Speed Car, the current holder of the world land speed record for an estate car (225.609 mph by the way at the Salt Flats in 2003 if you’re asking). Or the MG 'Bonneville 97 1.4' Project Car (Project EXF) that recorded 217.4mph driven by Terry Killborne from the USA in 1997.

Also included in the sale is a large selection of MG Sport & Racing merchandise that includes clothing, promotional material and even china tea sets! Very British.
