On 16 October, Bonhams will be holding a motorcycle auction in Sussex. As well as the two-wheelers, a collection of rare, historic motorcycle helmets will also be going under the hammer.

Wouldn’t it be nice if motorcycle clothing and accessories absorbed the abilities of their wearers and passed them on to the next owner? For one of the helmets to be auctioned is that of Bob Foster, the World Motorcycle Champion of the 1954 season, which unfortunately doesn’t come complete with his talents. It’s probably for the best, though: it would also present unimaginable danger…

On a serious note, the collection is a fascinating one and we have compiled some of our favourites in our gallery above. Also of interest at the same auction is the potentially record-breaking 1928 Brough Superior.
