Alpenglühen

Alpenglühen (or Alpenglow if you insist on the anglicised version) is that red and gold band that touches the top of snow-covered mountains when the sun is just below the horizon. It’s the sort of sight that inspired today’s theme – the beauty of the Alps.

It’s a beauty that delighted, for example, notorious womaniser Roger Vadim and 17-year-old Catherine Deneuve when, in the summer of 1961, they escaped the metropolis and headed for the French Alps in a silver Ferrari Cal’ Spider. But escape is not so easy: not only were they pursued by paparazzi, they were also shadowed by a herd of cows, as our rather surprising photo gallery reveals. Join us as we tour the Alps and select the best routes, cars (and planes) for a long weekend in the mountains.
