Sir Stirling Moss and the Aston Martin Cygnet: a surprise birthday present for Lady Susie

No sooner had he decided to cease competitive racing, than Sir Stirling Moss was once again behind the wheel of a pale metallic green Aston. This time, however, instead of it being a DBR1 or DB3S, both cars he drove to success in period, it’s the Gaydon company’s latest city runabout, the Cygnet.

Famous for his high-tech Mayfair flat and extensive business interests in the Capital, Sir Stirling and Lady Susie Moss are the perfect-profile customers for what Aston Martin describes as “the ultimate Tailor-Fit solution for city living”.

The Aston Martin Racing Green Cygnet was a surprise birthday gift from Sir Stirling to Lady Susie, and was presented at the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall on 12 July. The car was ordered from the company’s oldest distributor, HWM in Walton-on-Thames, whose name is synonymous with its own racing cars in the Fifties. Moss was given an early break in Formula One by George Abecassis, who jointly ran HWM.

Speaking at the event at the RAC, Sir Stirling Moss said: “My greatest partner in everything that I do, Susie, is an amazing person and frankly the best wife a man could have.

“Since seeing a pre-production Cygnet in January I knew that it was the perfect car for Susie; a proper little piece of British luxury and perfect for our life in town.”
