RM at Monterey - 17 - 18th August 2007

Held over two days, RM’s 2007 sale will include nearly 200 motor cars, many at ‘No Reserve’, at their familiar The Portola Plaza Hotel venue. With the inclusion of several high profile Ferraris, as well as the usual top dollar entries, there is every chance of bettering last year’s $43m event.

Top-selling lot will surely be the 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder Alloy Competizione. Estimated at $4,000,000 - $5,000,000, the car is not any old Spyder California (the convertible version of the semi-racing 250 GT Tour de France), but the Bob Grossman/Fernand Tavano car from the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours where it finished a very honourable fifth overall and first in class.

1964 Cooper-Monaco Race Car - $300,000 - $400,000

1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso Speciale - $400,000 - $500,000

Hot on the open Ferrari’s heels – in value, if not pace – are three pre-War cars, the 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Town Car by Bohman & Schwartz at $2,300,000 - $3,000,000, the 1933 Delage D8S Coupe Roadster by de Villars, $2,500,000 - $3,000,000, and the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster by Mayfair at $2,500,000 - $3,000,000.

1960 Maserati 3500 GT Vignale Spyder - $225,000 - $300,000

1930 Bugatti Type 35B Grand Prix Car - $600,000 - $800,000

Always favourites at Monterey sales, with the prospect of a possible entry to the week-ending Pebble Beach concours, these show-stopping 1930s supercars traditionally pull in big money.

1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 MKII Fixed Head Coupe - $125,000 - $175,000

The catalogue contains all the upper market entries you’d expect from the European Grandes Marques. Aston Martins include the 1955 DB2/4 MKII Fixed Head Coupe at $125,000 - $175,000, and the 1961 DB4 GT "Factory Lightweight", $1,600,000 - $1,900,000, while the 1960 Maserati 3500 GT Vignale Spyder, for $225,000 - $300,000, is a model that’s value has increased in recent years.

1953 Allard J2 Cadillac Le Mans Roadster - $350,000 - $450,000

In addition to the headlining Ferrari there are several more examples from Maranello, including an intriguingly titled 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso ‘Speciale’ at $400,000 - $500,000. This car was converted to covered headlamp specification by Italian-domiciled US coachbuilder Tom Meade when new, and it has the look of a TDF or 250 GT Pininfarina Cabriolet. There’s also a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza at $1,400,000 - $1,800,000, a car that has seen extensive in-period US racing by the likes of Gregory and owner McAfee.

1939 Lagonda Rapide Tulipwood Tourer - $350,000 - $450,000

1966 Shelby 427 Cobra - $725,000 - $825,000

There’s a little less ‘muscle’ at RM this year, however a car worthy of note is the 1964 Dodge Hemi Charger Concept Car. Priced at $1,500,000 - $2,000,000, the one-off was intended by the Chrysler chiefs to showcase the design and engineering talent of the company at a time when other major US manufacturers were producing show cars and non-working styling exercises.

This one ‘works’ in a big way with its 600+ horsepower race-prepped 426 c.i. V8 and could be one of the surprises of the sale.
