RM at Monterey - 17 - 18th August 2007 Review

Top seller at RM’s 2007 Monterey extravaganza (that grossed $46 million) was, predictably enough, the ex-Le Mans 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Spyder California Competizione, selling for $4,950,000. This was one of nine vehicles topping the magic $1 million mark.

The other big sellers included the ex-Mars family 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Town Car ($4,400,000), a 1933 Delage D8S Coupe Roadster with one-off de Villars coachwork ($3,740,000) and the 1959 Aston Martin DB4 GT ‘Factory Lightweight’ for $1,650,000.

1953 Allard JR Cadillac "Le Mans" Roadster - Sold for $341,000

1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe - Sold for $495,000

The top selling Ferrari had been restored in Ferrari red, which was a pity as the original 1959 class winner (and 5th overall car) was metallic grey carrying various racing modifications.

As we previewed, the home-grown muscle cars were not as prevalent as in years past so it was the traditional RM Monterey fare of ex-competition and 1930s elegance holding sway. An example of the former was the 1953 Allard JR Cadillac "Le Mans" Roadster selling for $341,000, while the latter category included the Duesenberg and the Delage as well as a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster for $2,530,000.

1960 Maserati 3500 GT Spider - Sold for $275,000

1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder - Sold for $1,056,000

One of the interesting US performance car entries was the 1964 Dodge Hemi Charger Concept Car. This 600+ hp fully functioning styling exercise sold for $1,100,000 - low estimate but still a significant sum.

Nearly 200 cars passed over the auction block and 92% of these found new owners. The few non-sellers included the 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, and the 1937 Delage D6-3L Grand Prix Race Car.

1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 MKII Fixed Head Coupe - Sold for $121,000
