On 20-21 January 2011, RM Auctions’ Arizona sale will be offering 11 desirable Ferraris, including the headline car – a stunning 1949 Ferrari 166 MM Touring Barchetta.

No ordinary Ferrari, this, but a car that’s described by Rob Myers, Chairman and Founder of RM Auctions, as “one of the most meticulously documented Ferraris we have ever had the pleasure of offering”. Coming from RM, that’s some statement. The rare, race-bred 166 MM, chassis number 0024 M, was originally commissioned for the 1949 Paris motor show, appearing in the Argentinean racing colours of yellow and blue. The 10th of just 25 examples featuring Barchetta coachwork from Touring, its racing debut at the 1950 Mar del Plata in Argentina saw it placed first overall. It also raced in the 1951 Mille Miglia, in the hands of female driver Aprile Palmer, who purchased the car shortly afterwards.

Today, 0024 M has been fully restored and finished in red, but boasts original components, including chassis, numbers-matching engine, gearbox and differential.

As well as the other Ferraris in the sale, plus a host of other European – and American – delicacies, there is a great deal for the British car specialist to drool over. Last year, RM Auctions held an Arizona sale with the memorable title ‘The British Are Coming’ – and the event was a tremendous success. So, on 20 January, the British are coming back… with an auction-opening assortment of Austin-Healey, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Bentley, Morgan, Rolls-Royce, Lotus, AC, Allard and MG crossing the block.
