New BMW 760i and 760Li
BMW has introduced an all-new twin-turbo, 6.0-litre V12 into its 7 Series range. Equipped with a new eight-speed automatic gearbox, the cars will set the benchmark for mainstream luxury saloons.
Two versions of the 7 Series will be fitted with the latest 12-cylinder engine. The standard-wheelbase model (760i) is now joined by a longer (by 1400mm) 760Li. New from the ground up, the latest all-alloy V12 produces 544bhp at 5000rpm, with maximum torque of 750Nm (553lb ft) available from just 1500rpm.
In addition to twin turbochargers, the new motor also features direct fuel injection and BMW’s double-VANOS variable valve-timing camshaft.
Unsurprisingly, BMW claims that performance does not come at the price of increased consumption and poor emissions. Still awaiting official testing, the company expects the new engines to power the 760i to 62mph in just 4.6 seconds - yet average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle should be 12.9 litres/100km. This is an improvement of 4.5 per cent compared to the old model.
It could well be that a variation of the engine will power the new Rolls-Royce 200EX.
