MINI Coupé: latest specification revealed

With an official launch just a couple of weeks away, BMW MINI has released details of the exact model line-up of its first two-door coupé.

As you’d expect, the sporty coupé with its slightly retro fixed-head-coupé styling (the company refers to it as a ‘helmet roof’) packs the hottest four-cylinder engines in the standard MINI’s range.

Four versions will be available at launch: 211bhp MINI John Cooper Works Coupé; 184bhp MINI Cooper S Coupé; 122bhp MINI Cooper Coupé; and the 143bhp, oil-burning – but quick – MINI Cooper SD Coupé. No prices have yet been mentioned.

The tailgate and roof section features an active rear spoiler (which deploys over 50mph) in addition to the integral roof spoiler. Although a strict two-seater, the little car has a high-opening tailgate and a large luggage area with through-loading facility. This, so BMW says, gives what’s clearly very much a ‘lifestyle’ vehicle a “large, variable-use luggage area”.

We’ll look forward to the surfboard and/or mountain bike photo, then.

(The photos you see here, by the way, aren’t of the car in finished form. The swirly pattern on the rear of the car is for disguise, with BMW keeping its shiny press pack portfolio for the forthcoming debut. Surfboards... bikes... mark my words.)
