Symbol Audio’s retro hi-fis combine the best of both worlds

The small, New York-based design company Symbol Audio manufactures hi-fi consoles in the style of those from the 1950s and 1960s, combining both analogue and digital sound…

Progress doesn't necessarily mean better quality – take digital music, for example. We accept poor sound, cheap-looking plastic speakers, online streaming services and wireless playback. Whatever happened to the old days, when you could sit back with a glass of wine and a handpicked selection of music, played on a proper hi-fi console made from precious wood. Digital technology and old-school analogue enjoyment don’t necessarily have to contradict each other, however, as the retro hi-fi designer Symbol Audio has proved, with its range of handmade consoles and panel cabinets.
