Coys 'Spirit of Motoring' at Ascot, 8 October 2011: Preview

1958 Aston Martin DB MK III: £75,000 - £85,000

Whether you’re a refined individual who appreciates the subtle virtues of a 1958 Aston Martin DB Mk III (British Racing Green, green hide interior, buff log book, all the proper stuff); or a rather more flamboyant character, likely to admire the metallic Opal Green Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible with white leather interior, Ascot Racecourse is the place to be on Saturday 8 October, when Coys’ Spirit of Motoring sale brings down the hammer on a fine selection of cars.

Coys describes the DB Mk III (estimated at £75,000 to 85,000) as “an uncommonly authentic example” and just the thing to add to any “serious” collection. Meanwhile, that Cadillac – perhaps destined for a slightly less “serious” buyer? – is, we’re told, the 8th car off the 1956 production line. It comes with UK registration and an estimate of £70,000 to 80,000. If the bidding goes your way on the day, and the unseasonally warm weather holds out, it could be just the thing to drive home from Ascot.

What else? Well, the Classic Driver office’s top pick from the rather good selection of Porsches just has to be the 1954 356 Pre-A Coupé, estimate £85,000 to 100,000, although the 1962 356 B Cabriolet (£65,000 to 75,000) definitely deserves a look. Fresh from restoration and “well-known in Porsche circles”, ‘356 PFK’ looks utterly charming in its white paintwork and red interior.

Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce enthusiasts will sit up and take notice when it comes to the two 1936 Phantom IIIs – one a Sedanca de Ville by Gurney Nutting, the other a Limousine by Hooper, and both carrying an identical estimate: £75,000 to 90,000.

Other entries to catch our eye include a LHD 1959 XK150 S Roadster (£80,000 to 90,000) and, wearing the same estimate and with just 17,000 miles on the clock, a four-year-old Bentley Azure in dark, sapphire blue. A stunning car at – needless to say – a fraction of its original price.
