Coys Auto Moto d'Epoca - Padova October 28th 2006 - Preview

Held at the Auto e Moto d’Epoca exhibition at Padova in Northern Italy, Coys' next sale inevitably has an Italian feel to it with no less than 11 Ferraris entered, including two special-bodied 250 GTs, one in the style of the immortal ‘Californian Spyder’.

Based on a Ferrari 250GT Pininfarina, the ‘recreated’ car is high quality homage to one of the most desirable convertibles ever made. Its estimate of EURO 285,000 - 320,000 represents a fraction of what a genuine car is worth (EURO 1m+...). Also in the sale is a similarly well-executed 1963 Ferrari 250GT Alloy Berlinetta in the style of a Short Wheelbase for EURO 240,000 - 250,000, and a 1995 Alfa Romeo TZ2 Replica at EURO 185,000 - 220,000, both the latter cars having been bodied by Giovanni Giordanengo of Cuneo, an expert ‘artisan’ well known for his exacting replicas of competition and road-going Ferraris and Alfa Romeos.

Very much original Maranello production are the two Ferrari 365GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ models in the catalogue, the Swiss-registered early yellow 1969 ‘Plexiglass’ car is estimated at EURO 190,000 - 220,000, while the Grigio metallizzato 1973 model, with the later ‘pop-up’ headlamps, is EURO 140,000 - 160,000, and benefits not only from a stylish colour scheme but also factory a/c.

There is also another Swiss-registered (so EU taxes payable if exported) car, a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS that you can ‘Refer Department’ for price.

Moving northwards, in addition to the TZ2, Milanese manufacturer Alfa Romeo is represented by a 1947 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 S for EURO 90,000 - 110,000. Like so many cars from Alfa it was originally exported to South America (Argentina) when new, but has subsequently had just two more owners, the present enjoying its capabilities as a long-distance tourer for international rallies. Among the other Alfas is a 1966 Alfa Romeo Sprint Zagato prepared for modern historic competition for EURO 42,000 - 45,000.

1963 Ferrari 250 GTE - EURO 85,000 - 90,000

1979 Ferrari 512 BB - EURO 85,000 - 90,000

The 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, EURO 275,000 - 300,000, looks nice in its classic silver/red leather combination, while enthusiasts for rare, road-going race cars will like the 1970 McLaren M6 GT, chassis BMR M6 GT2, for EURO 330,000 - 350,000. There’s also a solitary Aston Martin amongst the plethora of Italian exotica, a 1991 Virage for EURO 50,000 - 53,000, and keeping it in good company is the 2000 Bentley Continental T at EURO 125,000 - 132,000.

1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Group 4 3.0 Litre Rally Car - EURO 125,000 - 133,000

1970 McLaren M6 GT - EURO 330,000 - 350,000

Finally, away from all the high performance machinery, spare a thought for the entry of uniquely Italian small-capacity motor cars that give such a lot of enjoyment for little outlay. Cars like the 1968 Fiat 1500 Osca Spyder at EURO 18,000 - 20,000, or the 1964 Autobianchi Bianchi Cabriolet for EURO 9,000 - 11,000, or your writer’s favourite, the 1968 Autobianchi Bianchina Panoramica Lusso (a ‘luxury’ version of the Fiat 500 Giardiniera) for EURO 4,500 - 5,500.

Prior to the motor car sale Coys will be offering a selection of automobilia including several items of race clothing worn by Rubens Barrichello and various scale models, photographs and paintings.
