Snapshot, 1972: Ickx and Andretti look on the sunny side of life

It’s 1972, and ahead of the first European Formula 1 Grand Prix of the season at Jarama in Spain, Works Ferrari drivers Jacky Ickx and Mario Andretti model the latest innovations in designer eyewear as they soak up the sun…

While the Italian-American racer Mario Andretti is yet to realise his potential behind the wheel of a Ferrari single-seater, the Belgian Jacky Ickx is very much in the hunt for championship glory. Unusually, this year’s Spanish Grand Prix is being held on a Monday to coincide with a national public holiday. In qualifying, Ickx stuck his car on pole, while Andretti settled for fifth. And Andretti’s woes will be compounded in the race when his notoriously fragile Ferrari’s engine will give way. Ickx, meanwhile, will put up a valiant fight but ultimately have to settle for second position, behind the formidably quick Lotus 72D of Emerson Fittipaldi. Fortunately, it’s these men’s driving skills that will be remembered for decades to come and not their taste in sunglasses…
