After three years as F1 Sponsorship Manager for Ferrari, followed by a short stint working for ex-F1 driver Andrea De Adamich, Tommaso Gelmini decided to fulfil his true ambitions. In January 2003 he launched GPS Classic, based in Soragna, Italy.
At the heart of the company is the GPS Classic repair shop, manned by a team of mechanics with over 30 years’ experience of getting the best from rare, high-value cars. The repair shop covers an area of more than 500 square metres, with specialised zones for specific tasks. There’s an area dedicated to the restoration and overhaul of engines, gearboxes, differentials, clutches, braking and suspension systems. Here an expert team evaluates problems and implements solutions, then tests and re-evaluates until they are satisfied that the car is performing to the highest standards.
GPS Classic also specialises in the preparation of competition cars, developing engines to run smoothly and powerfully, using cutting-edge machinery and a sophisticated engine test bench. Then there is a section designated to the manufacture of spare parts, developed and created to order. The final section is where highly skilled workers examine specific aspects of the cars: the carburettors, perhaps, or electrical circuitry and components.
As well as the repair shop, GPS Classic offers garaging services – not just a place to store your car, but also staffed by a team of experts who will maintain and treasure it. This might be as simple as starting the engine at regular intervals; or it could be a full programme of care, planned with the owner in advance. The storage area is protected by a sophisticated alarm system which is connected to the local police station, guaranteeing the safety of the car, equipment and instruments.
GPS Classic also provides technical assistance for classic and historic cars during such events as the Mille Miglia, Tour Auto, Rally di Montecarlo, Winter Marathon, GP Historique de Monaco, Goodwood Revival and the Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge. Not only does the company look after the car on such occasions, it also assists the client on a personal level, helping to simplify an individual’s participation: from entry forms and transportation, to arranging flights, hotels, rental cars and so on. And of course, GPS Classic can help with the buying and selling of suitable vehicles – with a strong emphasis on Italian marques among its cars for sale!
Vehicle transport, throughout Europe, is the final specialist service offered. The transport is fully closed, equipped with a satellite alarm system and managed by fully trained staff with plenty of experience in moving high-value cars.
GPS Classic is based in Soragna, a few kilometres from the A1 motorway exit of Fidenza. Soragna is only around 100 km from such major northern cities as Milano, Bologna, Genova – and sits even closer to Modena, Mantova and Brescia. It is an area of great cultural interest. The birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi is just six kilometres away. In nearby Chiaravalle one can visit the Abbey of 1135, the 13th Century cathedral at Fidenza, the Sanctuary and famous rock at Fontanellato, or the castles and churches of Castell’Arquato, Grazzano Visconti, Vigoleno, Bardi, Felino, Torrechiara and Canossa.
