Classic Driver Dealer: Bill Shepherd Mustang

Byfleet is an area best known for its proximity to the famous Brooklands track, as well as being home in the 1960s to Alan Mann Racing. It’s also the location of Bill Shepherd Mustang, a company owned by a self-confessed American V8 fanatic, who has prepared and raced Cobras, Mustangs, Falcons and Galaxies for over 20 years.

Classic Driver readers and historic racers will be familiar with Bill’s exploits in his AC Cobras (one green, one orange), as well as the 7-litre Vauxhall Calibra ‘Thundersaloon’. As an ace preparer, racer and businessman, it was a natural progression to open a sales and workshop facility dedicated to V8s. At the same time, Ford’s 21st Century take on its iconic Mustang was proving a big sales success in Europe, as a reliable, keenly priced, car of character.

Classic Driver Dealer: Bill Shepherd Mustang Thus was born Bill Shepherd Mustang, and this week the company celebrated the opening of its brand-new workshop and showroom with a party. Guests present included well-known names from motorsport and historic racing, such as Richard Williams, Julius Thurgood, Rae Davis, David Piper, John Bendall, Julian Balme and Nigel Hulme.

As well as your Editor – who first met Bill over 20 years ago, on British race tracks, pitting Aston Martin against AC.

Bill Shepherd Mustang’s Sales Manager, David Wilson, was on hand to discuss customers’ requirements, showing off the recently arrived 2008 Mustang Bullitt, in stock and available for immediate delivery.

It’s not all modern Mustangs, though, as the company will also source and sell original cars from the ‘60s.

Those looking for extra performance can specify upgrades to the standard new cars, including two outputs from Paxton Superchargers (420bhp/470bhp), wider wheels, and stiffened and lowered suspension.

You can even go the whole hog and order a new Shelby GT500 - or just fit the lookalike stripes and spoiler kit available in Byfleet.

Bill’s a big fan of the new Mustang: “What else can you buy for that sort of money that gives you such fun? The standard car is around £25,000, and that’s for a really different, well-made, 300bhp V8 with a lot of character. It’s a great machine.”

And for those that have been there and done it with Mustangs, yet still haven’t got the T-shirt? They’ll sell you one of those as well.
