1962 Porsche 356B 1600 Cabriolet - £50,000 - 60,000
Bonhams has assembled a nigh-on 100-car catalogue for its 2010 Goodwood Festival sale. Buyers can choose from entries as varied as a 1966 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2 'America' Coupé to the 1962 Porsche 356B 1600 Cabriolet. Both LHD, the former will cost you £110,000 - 130,000, while the latter, ‘Bali Blue’ drop-top is competitively estimated at £50,000 - 60,000.
Both exude class - as you’d expect from a Goodwood sale.
Pictured on the cover of the catalogue is one of the highlights of the sale, the ex-Yoshiyuki Hayashi, 1958 model/1980s assembled, 3.8-litre Lister-Jaguar 'Knobbly'. Estimated at £250,000 - 300,000, the green/yellow sportscar has been a familiar sight on British circuits in recent years. The ‘1980s assembled’ refers to it being built in recent times from many original Lister parts – including a once bent, now repaired period chassis frame, together with a correct Lister de Dion tube, distinctive final-drive unit and road wheels.
Despite lacking a period chassis number, it could well contain more original componentry than many a ‘matching numbers’ Lister...

Beating the Jaguar-powered sports-racer on price is the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Convertible. Carrying a nice number plate, ‘VDB 5’ – its original – and an even more impressive estimate, £400,000 - 500,000, as a Vantage-engined, convertible DB5 the dark-coloured Aston is both rare and highly desirable.

There’s also a 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series IV to Vantage specification (£110,000 - 130,000), a 1934 Aston Martin 1½-Litre Mark II Sports Saloon (£110,000 - 130,000) and a reasonably priced 1978 Aston Martin V8 Series 3 Saloon (£25,000 - 30,000).
Along a similar, 1960s GT theme, in addition to the Astons and Jaguars there are several Italian cars that will appeal to Classic Driver readers. £30,000 - 35,000 for the 1964 Maserati Mistral Coupé sounds pretty good to me, while those with slightly fuller wallets will like the silver Lamborghini 400GT, and the RHD Avorio (ivory) 1961 Maserati 3500GT Vignale Spyder for £130,000 - 150,000.
Don’t forget to look at the LHD 1977 Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer (£50,000 - 60,000), and do mind your gold medallion in the fan belt of the 1990 Ferrari Testarossa (£32,000 - 36,000) when carrying out an underbonnet inspection.

There are a couple of favourites from the Classic Driver ‘Sleeping Beauties’ collection, too, namely: a 1960 Facel Vega HK500 (£70,000 - 80,000) and an ex-Yasmin and Simon Le Bon c.1974 Alfa Romeo Montreal for £14,000 - 18,000.
The Bonhams Festival sale has sold some fine competition (often very ‘Goodwood-able’) cars in the past. In addition to the Lister-Jaguar, there’s a really superb 1956 Austin-Healey 100M Roadster (with in-period Buenos Aires 1000Km racing history) at £45,000 - 55,000 and a 1958 '2-litre' Cooper-Climax Type 45 Formula 1/Formula 2 single-seater for £60,000 - 70,000. Both of these cars are attractively priced, the Healey, in particular, catching my eye.
1954 Jaguar XK120 Drophead Coupé - £44,000 - 50,000
Finally, of the three Jaguar XK120s in the auction, do look at Lot 366, the 1954 XK120 Drophead Coupé. Estimated at £44,000 - 50,000, not only is it nicely patinated (okay, it could probably do with a bit of work...) in dark green with brown leather, but it also carries the most appropriate registration number: ‘OLD 120’. You’d have to have it, wouldn’t you?
Prior to the motor cars, Bonhams will sell nearly 300 items of automobilia including Five Ferrari 250 LM Borrani front wheels, estimated at £2500 – 3500.
The 2010 Bonhams Goodwood Festival auction will take place at Goodwood House on Friday 2 July. Automobilia will start at 12:00 with motor cars commencing at 14:00.
