Extending its Quail Lodge sale to two days this year, Bonhams will offer over 100 cars and a wealth of automobilia at its showpiece Monterey-week event. A considerable proportion of the sale is Porsche-related due to the inclusion of entries from the Michael Amalfitano collection.

In pride of place is the 1970 Porsche 917 Interserie Spyder (‘Refer Dept.’ for price). Although now in psychedelic 1970s colours and simple open two-seater configuration, as a blue/orange JW Automotive Gulf coupé it was driven by Mike Hailwood and David Hobbs at the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours, leaving the road when caught out by a snap rainstorm early in the race.

There’s also an ex-works 1967 Porsche 910 coupé (ex-Mitter/Bianchi Nürburgring 1000km for $675,000 - 725,000), a 1975 Porsche Carrera RSR 3.0 ($325,000 - 375,000), a Jägermeißter-liveried 1988-89 Porsche 962 Group C car ($425,000 - 475,000) and – a rarity, this – a 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 Lightweight. The latter is one of only 20 such 964 Carrera 4s built by Porsche and estimated at $120,000 - 140,000.

The Ex-Bruce McLaren Briggs Cunningham Team Sebring 3-Hours winning, 1961 Fiat-Abarth 1000 Bialbero - $300,000 - 350,000

Non-Amalfitano racing cars to be sold at the 2010 Quail Lodge sale include the 1974-75 Gulf-Cosworth GR8 (3rd at Le Mans in 1974 and estimated at $1,300,000 - 1,600,000) and a ‘Refer Dept.’ 1953 Maserati A6GCS.

Away from the tracks, the catalogue brims with generally high-quality entries. $600,000 - 700,000 is, on the face of it, on the pricier end of ‘pricey’ for a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster. If you take a moment to consider its two extensive restorations (one by the factory to ‘as-new’ condition in 1970), though, the strong price makes sense, and it looks simply stunning in the colour combination of pale blue/tan leather.

Of the older cars, it’s another Mercedes that catches the eye: the 1930 Mercedes-Benz 38/250 7.1 Litre Supercharged 'SS' Sports Tourer, a striking machine for $2,000,000 - 3,000,000. Pre-War Rolls-Royces can be no less impressive, and Bonhams has several to be sold, including a 1930 Phantom I Ascot Sport Phaeton ($285,000 - 325,000), a 1929 Phantom I Sports Phaeton ($250,000 - 350,000) and a 1929 Phantom I Ascot Tourer for $165,000 - 185,000.

Catalogued as an “enormously usable historic sports car”, there’s also the 1937 BMW 328 $550,000 - 650,000.

Older, and competition cars aside, Bonhams’ Quail sale also includes a generous selection of more everyday classics from Jaguar, Austin-Healey, Porsche and MG.

Finally, in the “well, Steve, so what would you have...” category (an extensive one, I know...) is the 1967 Porsche 911S Sport Kit II ($200,000 - 250,000). This light ivory coupé is a typical product of an enthusiastic Stuttgart factory supplying off-the-shelf racing equipment to privateers worldwide. It has extensive in-period (SCCA and Trans Am, winning the under-two-litre category of the 1967 Kent 300 Trans Am) racing history and – bar the superlight ‘R’ bodyshell – is as near to the works racers as you can get.

A lovely, small-capacity ‘saloon’ in fine, original condition.
