Bonhams Les Grandes Marques à Monaco - 16th May 2005

Monaco in May has long been one of the most popular venues for prestige classic car auctions, but only Bonhams has remained there since the heady days of the late 1980s. This year, for their 17th annual Les Grandes Marques à Monaco sale, they have assembled a superb selection of cars headed by two major collections: that of famous ‘60s/70s French F.1 and sports car ace, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, and another belonging to Italian software pioneer Silvano Cima.

The former is already well known and contains gems such as the 1973 Le Mans winning Matra MS670b and Pescarolo’s Matra MS120 Grand Prix car, but the Cima collection has been relatively unknown outside its native Italy until now. 65 year old Silvano Cima started building the collection in the late 1970s and it today contains 14 cars, all restored ‘like new’ or perfectly preserved. Highlights include a stunning, metallic green Lancia Aurelia Spyder America, complete with Nardi twin carb set up and Borrani wire wheels (Eu.170-180,000) and the actual Lancia Flaminia Super Sport Zagato which was first owned by Italian heart-throb Marcello Mastroianni (est.Eu.110-130,000).

There is a lovely, restored example of BMW’s iconic 507 Roadster, complete with hard top (Eu.240-260,000) and a Graber-restored Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing with rare factory fitted luggage and disc brakes (Eu.250-300,000). The star of the Cima collection is a one-off 1939 Lancia Astura Sports Coupé by French coachbuilder Marcel Pourtout, built for the Parisian Duke of Montaigu (Eu.280-350,000).

Elsewhere in the sale there’s a stunning 1955 Maserati A6G/54 Zagato berlinetta also from private Italian ownership (Eu.400-500,000), a very teutonic looking 1929 Mercedes-Benz SS tourer (Eu.2.0-2.2m) and even the ubiquitous 1960s Fiat 500 Jolly beach car (Eu.12-16,000)- no Monaco sale would be complete without one...

The Sale will include circa 30 motor cars, plus a selection of classic Riva motor launches- a complete list will be available when entries close at the beginning of April, and catalogues will be available from Bonhams later that month.
