Bonhams at Gstaad 19 Dec 2007 - Preview

Subtitled 'Ferrari et les Prestigieuses Italiennes', Bonhams’ annual Gstaad extravaganza features over 40 high-value Italian cars, such as this c.1960 Maserati 3500GT Series 1 Coupé estimated at CHF80,000 - 100,000.

It's been a couple of years now since the pre-Christmas sale in its fairy-tale snowy setting was an all-Ferrari affair. The marque from Maranello remains the most numerous, however, with 19 examples in the catalogue, many of them proudly carrying Certification from Ferrari Classiche.

Top of the Ferraris must be the 1966 Ferrari 275GTB/2 6C Berlinetta long nose, carrying a price of CHF1,000,000 - 1,100,000. The Rosso Rubino car is fresh from a 'frame-off' restoration and is catalogued as "presented in effectively 'as-new' condition". Very nice and, with its six-carb set-up and 1966 registration, more eligible for events than a four-cam.

1950 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Cabriolet - CHF360,000 - 480,000

1974 Ferrari 365GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ Berlinetta - CHF420,000 - 480,000

Two 'Daytonas' and three Boxers are in the sale and pick of the bunch must be the 1974 Ferrari 365GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ estimated at CHF420,000 - 480,000, a car delivered when new in yellow, but now meticulously restored by Italian specialists and repainted in Blu Celeste, an original Ferrari colour that goes nicely with the Fratelli Lippi black leather interior. The other front-engined V12 is a red 1972 car at CHF250,000 - 340,000. All the Boxers carry similar estimates (CHF130,000 - 180,000 or so) and you can choose between a 1976 512BB, a 1983 512BBi, and a 1980 Ferrari 512BB.

Of the older Ferraris, there's a 1958 250GT Berlinetta (CHF360,000 - 400,000) originally delivered to Julio Battista Falla, a resident of New York, USA and Havana. This has the distinction of special high-performance internal engine parts '048D' (to 250TR specification) fitted when new, on the instructions of 'DG' no less – the Director General, Enzo Ferrari himself.

1974 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale Coupé - CHF250,000 - 320,000

1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America - CHF550,000 - 650,000

1978 Ferrari 308GTB Vetroresina Coupé - CHF70,000 - 90,000

1963 Lancia Flaminia 2.8-Litre 3C Superleggera coupé - CHF40,000 - 50,000

If your tastes favour the even-earlier 250s, there's also a 1954 Ferrari 250 Europa Coupé for CHF650,000 - 750,000.

There are not many 500cc cars that can hold their heads high in a multi-million Swiss Franc sale, but of course Fiat's evergreen 500 is one of them. Bonhams' example is a 'Transformabile' saloon with a large opening roof, nicely colour-coordinated in grey with a red interior. It's estimated at CHF15,000 - 20,000, and another more economical entry is the 1963 Lancia Flaminia 2.8-Litre 3C Superleggera coupé for CHF40,000 - 50,000. Finished in metallic grey with red leather interior it's a handsome car.

And now for something completely different – the 1960-type Ferrari Dino 246 Formula 1 Racing Single-Seater By Bob Houghton/Graypaul Motors c.1986. Built by marque expert Houghton in the late-80s, this is a superbly constructed replica – using several original components – of the last of the top-line front-engined F1 cars. Its estimate is CHF1,000,000 - 1,200,000 – perhaps 10% of the price of an original (if you can find one, as most were scrapped or converted to rear-engined cars).

1980 Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer - CHF140,000 - 160,000

1952 SIATA 208 CS 2+2 Berlinetta - CHF450,000 - 550,000

And for two totally different cars to finish on, there's the 1924 Alfa Romeo RM Four-Wheel Drive Winter Sports Half Track, a car built for a perceived Winter Sports market in the 1920s at CHF350,000 - 450,000, and a 1952 SIATA 208 CS 2+2 Berlinetta (CHF450,000 - 550,000), the 1952 Paris Salon car and a potential Pebble and Villa d'Este entry with its one-off Bertone coachwork.

Prior to the car sale, Bonhams will auction 138 lots of automobilia including The Alberto Ascari collection of motor racing trophies and ephemera: estimate CHF30,000 - 40,000.
