Barons Sale 20th April 2004 - Review and Results

Over £270,000 of cars were sold at Barons’ recent sale at their familiar Sandown Park Racecourse venue. The ex-Peter Sellers Bentley Continental found a new owner at £35,510, a 1973 Jaguar E Type S3 V12 convertible sold for £22,260 and this rare ‘Banham’ conversion of a 1971 Aston Martin DBS6 went over estimate for £11,660.

The Sellers Bentley was on the low end of its estimate but another 1950s' car, the 1956 SI Hooper Bodied Saloon ‘Empress Style’, sold for a reasonable £11,660 - neither cars enjoying the more popular styling cues of the more famous R-type and S-series cars of the period. Of the V12 E-types on offer, the Teal Blue car did not sell but the 1973 Old English White was in good condition and went for the appropriate amount. Laurence Sayers Gillan of Barons was particularly pleased with the £13,886 achieved by the 1931 Vauxhall Golfers T80 Coupé. “A really lovely car and worth every penny.” Also selling well for their types were the 1957 Jensen 541, going for £9,010, and a good condition 1971 Daimler Sovereign 4.2 at £6,254.

With a few cars not selling, despite their condition and price, it just goes to show the importance of colour and specification. The 1988 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit was a case in point. Finished in Wedgwood Blue, with beige hide (piped blue), the car was in good order and estimated at a reasonable £11,000 - 13,000 but failed to find a buyer, sellers perhaps looking for a dark blue or green with tan or black interior car. Another non-seller was the 1986 Ferrari Mondial QV Convertible but this was a mystery as it was Rosso Corsa with Crema leather interior. An attractive four-seat convertible Ferrari, in apparently good condition, for around the £20,000 mark - come on you lot where were you?!
