Barons at Esher December 11th 2007

Barons will sell a selection of classic cars at its next Esher sale that includes several Jaguars, Bentleys and Aston Martins, such as this 1970 DBS six-cylinder estimated at £18,000 - 22,000.

There's interest in all things Aston at the moment and with the market booming for DB4s, '5s and '6s, the DBS is most definitely a 'model on the move'. All this example lacks is the Vantage 3 x Weber set-up, but it's a manual, and in a nice colour (black with black seats), too. And for those insisting on an additional two cylinders, there's a 1978 Aston Martin V8 Series 3 for £15,000 - 20,000.

With at least 10 classic Jaguars in the sale, Barons hopes to have a model for every pocket. Top billing goes to the LHD 1965 Jaguar E-type S1 4.2 Roadster, estimated at £35,000 - 39,000. This car, well presented in Primrose Yellow and tan leather, is part of a deceased estate, and is said to have covered just 22,000 miles from new. There are two other LHD E-types: a 1969 S2 4.2 Roadster for £14,500 - 17,000, and a 1974 S3 Roadster at £21,000 - 25,000.

1969 MG MGC Roadster - £15,000 - 20,000
Just after the War, the Coventry company's XK series made it one of the most famous and desirable marques in the world. As the 1950s turned into the '60s, the ground-breaking XK120 gave way to ever-more powerful and comfortable cars like the XK140 and XK150, and an example of each is in the sale.

1958 Jaguar XK150S Roadster ex-USA LHD - £20,000 - 30,000

The 1956 Jaguar XK140 FHC (£35,000 - 45,000) is an attractive car in its BRG with tan hide interior, which has been the subject of a nut and bolt restoration, while the extremely rare LHD 1958 XK150S Roadster (£20,000 - 30,000), which is complete with an original-fitment louvred alloy bonnet - hinting at a possible racing history in period - is ripe for restoration but does run and drive. Barons has a good history of selling XKs, achieving record prices at recent sales and this 'barn find' car, previously unknown to even the XK Register, with its desirable - and difficult to find - Roadster bodywork could well be one of the surprises of the sale.

Of the other lots there's a good sprinkling of Bentleys, such as a 1997 Turbo RL for £19,000 - 23,000, and a discreet Black with tan hide 1977 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II at £5,500 - 8,000. Motorcycle fans will like the 1955 Norton Triton 690cc ‘Café Racer’ (£5,000 - 7,000) and the very 1970s (and rare) 1973 Triumph X75 Hurricane at £8,000 - 10,000.

1955 Mercedes-Benz 220 Ponton Saloon - £6,000 - 8,000

1977 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II - £5,500 - 8,000

1973 Triumph X75 Hurricane - £8,000 - 10,000

1960 Bentley S2 Standard Steel Saloon - £18,000 - 24,000

Finally, I know Laurence Sayers-Gillan of Barons has a soft spot for Americana, and the December sale has several examples of V8-powered machinery from across the pond. If it were Monterey in August or Scottsdale in February, the American salerooms may well have added an extra zero to the £10,000 - 12,000 estimate of Barons' 1963 Studebaker Hawk Gran Turismo Supercharged, a very rare American design with European influences.

The 1964 Plymouth Fury Sports Coupé, £17,000 - 20,000, looks a nice alternative to the ever-present Falcon and Galaxie, while the 1948 Cadillac Series 61 Fastback is from the early post-War design school with its nascent fins, broad 'mouth' and streamlined styling that pre-dated the R-Type Bentley Continental by several years.

All for £16,000 - 20,000, probably less than 10% of the value of the British car.

1989 Ferrari 328GTB Twin Turbo - £23,000 - 27,000

1954 MG TF 1250 - £15,000 - 18,000
