Avro 720 Mirage Ford GT
Most mirages dissolve as you approach them; but this one can race away at 220mph. The Avro 720 Mirage Ford GT, the result of a collaboration between Brooklands-based supercar specialist Avro Motor Cars and Roush Technologies, is a limited-edition version of the Ford GT. A very limited edition in fact – only 10 cars will be produced, and the first has just emerged from Roush’s Technical Centre in Brentwood, Essex.
Roush Technologies has impeccable credentials for such a project, being responsible for homologation of the European Ford GTs and the only officially appointed, Ford-approved service centre for the cars in the UK. Changes to the original Ford GT include engine and mechanical modifications and the removal of the rear bumper. Roush’s custom calibration package gives the Avro 720 Mirage Ford GT 720bhp at 6950rpm and a massive 627lb ft of torque at 4800rpm. The car is de-restricted, resulting in a top speed capability in excess of 220mph.
A Whipple supercharger, Accufab throttle body and inlet sleeve, and an Accufab exhaust system with ceramic-coated tips contribute to the performance gains. The running gear has been upgraded to match the boost in power: the front and rear track is 5mm wider than the standard car. The front brakes use AP Racing 6-pot front calipers with Stillen drilled and slotted discs, and the suspension has been lowered by 25mm.
Semi-matt black details and wheels contrast with the vibrant metallic orange body and each car will carry a numbered Avro plaque on the centre tunnel.
Avro Managing Director, Andy McGrath said, “The Ford GT is already a rare and sought-after motor car, and simply identifying and locating more available untitled vehicles has been a significant challenge for us. Once these cars are completed, we believe there will be no more.”
