Artcurial Sale in Paris 20th June 2005 - Preview

The next Artcurial Auction will celebrate 25 years of collectors cars sales at the Palais des Congrès de Paris. On this occasion two Matra single-seaters are included, an ex-Jackie Stewart MS9 F1 car, and a 1966 MS5 F2 Tyrrell Racing Team car of Jacky Ickx.

Created by the triumvirate of Lagardere - Ken Tyrrell - Jackie Stewart, the MS9 was launched on December 13 1967, and contested the first round of the World Championship at Kyalami, South Africa, in 1968 where Jackie Stewart put the car on pole next to Jim Clark and Graham Hill. This Matra comes from one of the most prestigious private collections, and is estimated at 280.000-350.000 EUROS. The ex-Ickx 1966 F2 MS5 is another Tyrrell Racing machine - that also won the Rouen GP driven by Adam Potecki - and will sell for 30.000 - 60.000 EUROS.

Florent Pagny: Baritone and... Porschiste! There are four cars coming from the collection of the celebrated French singer that will impress not just music lovers with the aesthetics of their shape and noise from their motors. Among the racing cars is a 1955 Porsche 550, a type famous for its performances in-period on the Carrera Panamericana, Mille Miglia and Le Mans. It was also notorious for being the car in which James Dean met his end. This particular chassis has enjoyed a life in modern historic racing, having been raced by Claude Picasso in two runnings of the historic Targa Florio as well as the Le Mans Classic. Estimate 550.000-650.000 EUROS.

Other lots of interest include a 1938 Bugatti Type 57 Ventoux that has just come from the celebrated collection of Michel Dovaz (est. 200 000- 250 000 EUROS), a 1966 Bizzarrini 5300 GT Stradale (est. 200.000- 250.000 EUROS), and a Lancia Flaminia Zagato (est. 75.000 euros).

The 1956 Cabriolet Grégoire Sport is one of just five examples remaining, designed to drawings made by Carlos Delaisse and completed by Henri Chapron. This flower of the French motor car industry, whose selling price was exceeded at the time only by that of Mercedes 300SL, was supremely elegant and was once driven by Francoise Sagan, the daughter of the engineer P. Quoirez, and friend of J.A. Gregoire (est. 100.000 EUROS).

The 1957 Lancia Appia Zagato « Camelo », had participated in the Mille Miglia of that year driven by Giorgio Lurani (est. 50.000 EUROS). Pre-War cars are represented by a Simplex Speedster reconstructed with an American La France engine of 14.5 litres! Estimate 50.000 EUROS.

In another category altogether is the 2004 Mercedes A-Class covered in 3,000 sheets of 24 carat gold leaf. An idea of the Maison FREBA, it will be auctioned for charity to benefit the association ‘Reporters sans Frontières’. This entry is sponsored by Arielle Dombasle. Estimated at 12.000 EUROS, it will make the sale a truly ‘Golden Occasion’!
