$2.3m for ex-McQueen Lusso at Christie's Monterey 2007

$2.3m for ex-McQueen Lusso at Christie's Monterey 2007 The ex-Steve McQueen 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L Lusso Berlinetta achieved nearly double its pre-sale estimate last night at Christie's 2007 Monterey auction, the new owner paying $2,310,000 for the privilige of having the 'King of Cool's' first Ferrari behind their garage doors.

The superbly presented car was estimated at $800,000-1,200,000 and its selling price (that included buyer's premium, as all our prices do) can be converted to £1,160,804 or EURO 1,711,111.

The next three highest-selling lots were pre-War, the 1930 Duesenberg J Convertible Berline, coachwork by Lebaron for $902,000, and the ex-Rod Blood 1908 Napier 45 HP Type 23A Seven Seater Touring Car ($682,000) and 1936 Auburn Model 852 Straight Eight Supercharged ‘Boattail’ Speedster ($423,500).

Christopher Sanger, Head of Car Sales, Christie’s Americas commented after the sale:

“The much-anticipated sale of Steve McQueen’s 1963 Ferrari Lusso exceeded our highest expectations, confirming the continuing allure of one of the most important pop icons of our time. Considered to be one of the most important celebrity-owned cars ever to come to auction, the 800-strong crowd greeted its arrival on the block with cheers and unbridled enthusiasm. Elsewhere in the sale, many cars exceeded their high sale estimates, and the 18-car Private European Collection was 100% sold. These successes are a direct result of Christie’s strategy of fewer and finer, tightly-focused sales of collector cars, sourcing business from around the world and presenting these to a database that stretches beyond the traditional car market,”

The sale grossed $8,197,057, with 72% sold by lot. To see the full results please HERE.
