After an exciting event-long duel, the overall winners of this year’s Mille Miglia retrospective are the all-Italian pairing of Giordano Mozzi and Stefania Biacca driving a 1933 Aston Martin Le Mans.
The pair finished with a final tally of 28,690 points, compared with 28,485 for the second-place 1927 Bugatti Type 37 piloted by Bruno and Carlo Ferrari. With pre-War cars filling the top six, it proved once again that careful preparation, meticulous time-keeping and faultless navigation more than make up for outright speed. Multiple winners (ten times – quite extraordinary), the husband-and-wife team of Giuliano Cane and Lucia Galliani were reunited with their usual BMW Classic-entered BMW 328 Mille Miglia Coupé yet could only finish fifth.
Popular entertainer Rowan Atkinson was teamed up with fellow Briton, BMW AG Board Member (Sales and Marketing) Ian Robertson. Their BMW Classic 328 Mille Miglia Roadster finished in 57th spot.
Among a horde of factory-entered ‘Gullwing’ Mercedes 300SLs, Classic Driver contributor Simon de Burton completed his first Mille Miglia in a worthy 261st place, ahead of many more illustrious team members that included veteran drivers Klaus Ludwig, Jochen Mass, Juan-Manuel Fangio Jnr. and Mika Hakkinen. He won’t often be able to say that.
