The 2007 Sale at Maranello

Neatly timed to coincide with not only Ferrari’s 60th anniversary but the Mille Miglia retrospective week, the sale to be held at Fiorano will be RM Auctions first foray into Europe. Early entries include the ex-NART 1970 512S, and a two-owner 1966 275 GTB/4.

Chassis 1006 was first delivered to Ferrari’s American distributor Luigi Chinetti in time for the Sebring 12 Hours in 1970 where it qualified in sixth place, driven by Same Posey and Ronnie Bucknum, ahead of eventual winners, the works 512S of Giunti, Vaccarella and Andretti. Raced throughout that year mainly in Can Am (driven by Pedro Rodriguez), the car was never converted to the later ‘M’ specification and ran again in World Championship sports car events in 1971, including a good run at Le Mans (but sadly retiring) where it ended its period racing career.

Passing through a series of well-known collector’s hands, including Steve Earle, Steven Griswold and Peter Kaus, the 512S spider has retained all its original features and is described by marque experts as “one of the most original and unmolested examples to exist”.

No estimates at the moment, although you can contact RM on the numbers below, but it’s a car that’s eligible for a lot of historic racing like the Le Mans Classic and – can you believe it? – the Tour Auto!

I like the sound of that.

Other early entries include a Ferrari 340MM (chassis 0268AM), a 1997 ex-Schumacher F1 car, a 1966 Ferrari Dino 206SP and the blue Ferrari 599 GTB that recently completed the 2006 Ferrari Panamerican 20,000 tour. All will be inspected in great depth by the Ferrari Classiche Department and fully authenticated before sale.

The silver 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, a LHD car with tan interior, should prove popular given this model’s strong growth in value in recent years, while selected Maseratis are also included, such as the 1936 Maserati 4CM, again verified and inspected by Maserati.

Over the years RM have proved to be one of the most professional operators on the US auction scene, and in association with Sotheby's it's their avowed intention to bring this to their first European sale, one that will be held at the headquarters of probably the most desirable car maker in the world, at the facility at Fiorano used by the multiple-championship-winning F1 racing team.

All aspects of travel and hotels in Italy can be handled by RM, and many collectors are already planning a long holiday that takes in the Mille Miglia as well as what is likely to be a very significant sale indeed. There will also be a selection of unique automobilia including several items of Scuderi Ferrari clothing and other ex-F1 parts and memorabilia.

Still time to consign
