Produced by Volkswagen to wrestle back the Nürburgring Class record from the Honda Civic Type-R, the Clubsport S with 306bhp is the most powerful Golf ever produced. Limited to only four hundred units to celebrate forty years of Golf production, only one hundred and fifty came to the UK. Visually, the Clubsport S is distinguished by a more aggressive front bumper, a prominent two-part rear roof spoiler, and side graphics. Production was strictly limited to three historic GTI colours: Tornado Red, Pure White, and Deep Black Pearl Effect. The ultra-exclusive two-seater, track-focused Clubsport S was a masterpiece of indulgent VW engineering and is widely recognised as the best hot hatch ever, excelling on both track and road.
It featured bespoke dampers, new front suspension knuckles, revised geometry and a lightweight front aluminium subframe. No rear seats were fitted, replaced by a crossbar with netting saving over 30kg. Powered by the bullet-proof EA888 2-litre turbocharged engine with an ECU upgrade mated to one of the slickest six-speed gearboxes, the Nurburgring Class Record came to Volkswagen with a time of 7 minutes and 49.21 seconds, a narrow margin of under two seconds. The Clubsport S was set up by Karsten Schebsdat who was the man that engineered the Porsche 997 GT3. His input included combining subtle aero modifications improving stability together with a mechanical limited-slip differential to make the Golf such a focussed hatchback with incredible balance.
Offered here, in the best of the three-colour choices, is a low mileage example in Deep Black Pearl Effect with a grey fabric Recaro interior. It has had two previous owners with the second owning it for nearly eight years. Servicing was carried out regularly by Fix Vorsprung VW AUDI Specialists in 2021/2024 and there are four service invoices with the mileage starting at 9,890 miles through to 2024 and 10,345 miles. Most recent work in the last twelve months has included a full service and wheel alignment with the speedometer reading 12,358miles. The unique plaque on the centre console shows No.150/400 and it's supplied with both keys, the owner’s wallet and a fresh MOT.
Any visit to YouTube will show multiple road tests of the Clubsport S by accomplished journalists and you will soon realise how capable this ultimate Golf GTi Clubsport S truly is. Because of its extreme rarity and status as the absolute peak of pure mechanical internal-combustion GTIs, it remains a highly coveted modern classic that holds its value incredibly well on the enthusiast market and surely a must for any collector.
