The Volkswagen Golf is without doubt one of the most influential models in European motoring history. Since its introduction in 1974, Volkswagen struck a perfect balance with the Golf between reliability, innovation and everyday ease of use. Each generation built on this success, but in the early 1990s Volkswagen dared to do something truly unique: it launched the Volkswagen Golf Country.

The Golf Country, based on the second-generation Golf (Mk2), was well ahead of its time. Where SUVs and crossovers are now an inescapable part of the streetscape, back in 1990 the Golf Country was a genuine pioneer. With its raised ride height, permanent four-wheel drive (Syncro), protective bars and rugged looks, it combined the comfort of a hatchback with the capabilities of an off-roader. Production was kept deliberately limited, which makes the Golf Country a highly sought-after and collectible model today.

Under the bonnet sits the proven 1.8-litre petrol engine, renowned for its durability and smooth character. Combined with a manual gearbox and the Syncro four-wheel-drive system, this Golf offered surprisingly plenty of grip and stability, both on tarmac and on rough terrain. This made the Golf Country not just unique in concept, but genuinely versatile in daily use.
