British Grand Touring at Its Finest – The 1976 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible Mark I A
Few automotive marques embody refined motoring, uncompromising craftsmanship, and understated luxury as convincingly as Rolls-Royce. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the cars built in Crewe have represented the very pinnacle of British engineering and continue to stand for uncompromising quality, timeless elegance, and exceptional comfort. With the introduction of the Corniche in 1971, Rolls-Royce combined the proven engineering of the Silver Shadow with a coupé or convertible body crafted exclusively by Mulliner Park Ward. The Corniche quickly became the preferred motor car of leading figures from business, culture, and aristocracy and remains one of the most elegant open grand tourers of its era.
The example offered here belongs to the short-lived Mark I A series, a technically and historically significant transitional version within the Corniche model range. Only 48 Mark I A convertibles were produced, making it one of the rarest and most exclusive variants of the entire Corniche family.
Beneath its long bonnet lies the legendary 6,750 cc Rolls-Royce V8 engine, renowned for its remarkable smoothness and virtually silent power delivery—characteristics that have defined the marque for decades. Paired with the effortlessly shifting three-speed automatic transmission, it delivers the driving experience Rolls-Royce famously described as "effortless motoring"—travel of the highest order, characterised by serenity, comfort, and effortless authority rather than overt sportiness.
This Corniche Convertible is presented in its elegant original Willow Gold paintwork, beautifully complemented by a luxurious brown leather interior. The warm colour combination perfectly accentuates the graceful lines of the hand-built bodywork, enhanced by finely finished chrome detailing and exquisite burr walnut wood veneers. The electrically operated soft top is in very good condition. Electrically adjustable leather seats and the rare Split Level Air Conditioning system further enhance passenger comfort and reflect the uncompromising luxury standards Rolls-Royce applied to its flagship models as early as the mid-1970s.
The vehicle's history is equally impressive. The Corniche was acquired in England in 1991 from a Lord before being exported to Germany. In 2004, it was imported into Switzerland, where it has since seen only limited use. Today, the convertible remains in only its second ownership and benefits from an exceptionally well-documented provenance. Its original paintwork, carefully documented maintenance history, and recently renewed Swiss Veteran registration, valid from 2026, all underline the authenticity and outstanding level of preservation of this exclusive Rolls-Royce.
Like every Corniche, this example was built largely by hand. Its exceptional build quality, outstanding choice of materials, and meticulous craftsmanship create the atmosphere of a traditional British luxury motor car—an experience that remains virtually unmatched today. With the top down, the Corniche reveals its true character: gliding almost silently, effortlessly composed, and displaying a level of refinement that few automobiles can equal.
