Belonging to an important European collection, this splendid car has recently emerged from full restoration. Looking at the comprehensive photographic file documenting the project, it is clear that nothing was left out. The body was stripped and repainted in specific Ferrari colours and the black body and metallic gold roof suits the elegant shape of the car perfectly. The interior was restored by the renowned Luppi business in Modena and the colour of the leather upholstery matches the roof perfectly. The wire wheels were refurbished in Italy by Ruote Borrani and fitted with new Pirelli tyres. As was common with models of this era, the engine was replaced at some unknown date but the car has the V12 Columbo engine with inside plugs that is the correct type for our model. It came from car n°1483GT, a coupé 250 GT Pininfarina. It is interesting to note that according to the historian Andreas Birner, the original engine for 0727 GT still exists and is in a Ferrari 250 GT Europa. During the restoration of our car, all mechanical elements were completely dismantled and refurbished and new forged pistons were fitted. The electrical circuit and all the instruments were also refurbished.

It is interesting to note that the 250 line signalled a new era for Ferrari which grew from a small enterprise to an industrial concern. Built around the splendid V12 Columbo engine, the 250 Europa began modestly in 1953, but with two changes in approach. Firstly, where Ferrari had previously worked with several coachbuilders, notably Vignale, they now began a stricter collaboration with Pinin Farina (still two words), and secondly, passenger comfort became a higher priority. The previous 166, 195 and 212 models were essentially race cars adapted for road use, whereas on the 250 GT, greater attention was given to the interior fittings, soundproofing, seats and cockpit space. The appearance of the letters GT for " Gran Turismo " also reflected the desire to appeal to a wider clientèle. Following the success of this new car, Ferrari and Pinin Farina set about increasing the pace of production, and began building a new factory for the coachbuilder at Grugliasco. While this was being finished, construction of the 250 GT was given to Boano coachbuilders, created in 1954 by Mario Boano, formerly of Ghia. He worked with his son Gian Paolo and partner Luciano Pollo. When the two Boanos left to join Fiat, Pollo took over the business with Boano's son-in-law, Ezio Ellena, with the name changing to Carrozzeria Ellena. This explains the Boano and Ellena 250 GTs, transition cars produced between 1956 and 1958. Some 129 examples were built, following the initial 35 examples of the 250 GT Europa. After this would come the more classical coupé, the 250 GT PF.

Classical, elegant and rare, this Ferrari is presented with a file of photographs documenting its restoration. The impeccable condition and finishing details of the car reflect the meticulous work of the coachbuilder and his craftsmen, and it is bound to appeal to enthusiasts.
