It is one of the most special and radical versions of the F90 generation of the M5. The CS designation stands for "Competition Sport" and represents an evolution of the M5 Competition, with more power, less weight and a tuning much more focused on sporty driving. Under the hood is the well-known S63 engine, a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that develops 635 hp and 750 Nm of torque, associated with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission. All this power is transmitted through the M xDrive system, which allows different traction configurations and includes a 2WD mode capable of disconnecting the front axle and leaving the car with only rear-wheel drive. The performance figures are impressive for a sedan of this size: the M5 CS can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds, reach 200 km/h in 10.4 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 305 km/h, electronically limited.
However, BMW didn't just increase the power. Compared to the M5 Competition, the CS lost approximately 70 kg thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber and other weight-reduction measures, weighing around 1,825 kg in DIN specification. The suspension received specific tuning, the ride height was reduced, and several components were developed to make the car's handling more precise and effective. The M carbon-ceramic brakes are part of the model's more extreme character, and the 20-inch Gold Bronze wheels have become one of its most recognizable visual features. Depending on the specification, it could also use Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, specially designed for high-performance driving.
From the outside, the M5 CS is immediately distinguishable from a conventional M5. Beyond the Gold Bronze wheels, it features exclusive details on the grille, various carbon fiber elements, and a CFRP hood with exposed carbon fiber sections. The result is a relatively understated appearance for the performance it offers, while maintaining the elegant silhouette of a large executive sedan.
The interior is also quite different. Instead of the M5's traditional five seats, the CS has only four, with two M Carbon seats in the front and two individual seats in the rear. The use of Alcantara and carbon fiber reinforces the sporty atmosphere, while several small details reference the Nürburgring. Despite this more radical approach, it remains a large and relatively practical sedan, with four doors, approximately five meters in length, and a 530-liter trunk.
The M5 CS had a relatively short production run, essentially between 2021 and early 2022, and was produced in limited quantities.
