Through to the new millennium, only Porsche and Ferrari counted more outright wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans than Jaguar. Flying the endurance racing flag for the United Kingdom, the marque’s run to seven victories was ignited by the iconic C-Type. The shapely sportscar claimed the spoils of glory at its first attempt in 1951; doubling that tally in 1953 earned the team a telegram from Queen Elizabeth II. Just 53 examples were originally constructed, with five-time Formula 1 World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio among the customers.
A beautifully realised homage to a competition great, this C-Type Recreation was commissioned by the vendor and built by Brazell Engineering in Daventry across 2012 and 2013. It was formed around a chassis (number 006) sourced from Jaguar specialist Lynx and dressed in hand-formed coachwork by Shapecraft. Under the skin sits a John Exley 3.4-litre straight-six engine with correct-type cylinder block and head, rated to deliver over 280 brake horsepower. The running gear is made complete by sand-cast H8 SU carburettors, a C-Type sump, Kent 460 cams, Moss closed-ratio gear set and C-Type top cover, Pearson Engineering rear axle fitted with 3.54 crown wheel and pinion, Thornton power lock differential, Orson half-shafts and hubs, and period design aluminium race fuel tank. Stopping power is provided by race-specification drum brakes.
Registered in the United Kingdom, wearing a number plate appropriately issued in period in Coventry, this C-Type Recreation is accompanied by an FIA Historic Technical Passport valid until 31 December 2026. It featured in the Vintage Sports-Car Club-organised Pomeroy Trophy at Silverstone in February 2019, for which it was driven by David Brazell himself.
Invoices in the history file show routine maintenance and inspections were entrusted to Brazell Engineering and M&C Wilkinson in South Yorkshire. Presented in Works livery British Racing Green and sporting Old English White roundels over period-correct suede green leather showing delightful patina and custom-made tonneau cover; this FIA-correct tribute to one of the great 1950s sportscars is poised to excite its next owner both on the public roads and out on track.
